Apps of the Week: Duet Display, Shift, Emoji Type, and more

It’s the weekend before Christmas and I’m still not finished with my handmade gifts. Around this time each year, I begin to realize I set my goals too high. I just run out of time before I run out of crafts. Luckily, I have a backup plan that involves last minute gifts in the form of apps.
If you can’t think of the perfect gift for that friend who has everything, an app or game may be just right. Whether you are looking for last minute gift ideas or just want to fill your iPhone with new stuff, we’ve got a list of apps and games for you to check out this weekend.
If you are a heavy emoji user, you have probably always been dreaming of a keyboard app like this. When enabled, it will suggest emoji while you type. For example, if you type the word “food,” you’ll get a list of emoji food items in your predictive typing suggestion bar. It makes it much easier for you to find the right illustration to express the feelings you are having. It is a basic keyboard, so you can use it for everyday typing. However, you’ll always have super fast and easy access to every emoji based on certain words you write. You do not have to allow full access to use the features. This app is available for $0.99.

Give It Up!

Rhythm tapping has just been given a facelift. In this game, players bounce along with an inky blob to the rhythm. Tap to jump over spikes or to jump up onto higher platforms. If you miss, your blob will go “splat.” As the song progresses, the stunts get more difficult. It’s all about timing, too. You can’t just jump over a spike all willy-nilly. You must tap along with the beat. So, be sure to get into the groove whenever spikes are near. They appear from above and below, so, you aren’t safe anywhere. New levels unlock new songs, but they also increase the difficulty. This game is available for $0.99.

Duet Display

I’ve given up on my decade old desktop and have switched, fulltime, to my MacBook Pro. I’m so used to the screen space of my desktop that everything feels so cramped on my tiny laptop screen. When I heard that Duet Display came out, I jumped on it. This app turns your iPad (or even iPhone) into a second screen. While that may not sound particularly special, what does make it special is that there is zero lag due to the fact that it has to be connected via USB. You can even use the touch screen to interact with items on your desktop or laptop. This app is available for $9.99.

Creatures Such as We

I am a sucker for choose-your-own-adventure books. I used to love to read them as a kid. I guess I’m still enamored at the unknown journey that awaits you in the pages of these interactive books. This game is a choose-your-own-adventure book that is fully text based. Players read along with the story of a lonely resident of the moon that is playing his or her own game that keeps ending badly with no reason why. Your job is to help the main character achieve a happy ending. The writing style encourages you to think inward about existence and the events that take place in the character’s life. This game is available for free.

Pentaction: Medieval

Turn-based strategy games usually feature an epic landscape with dozens of miniature military units that are animated when their turn comes up to attack, run, or protect something. If you strip away all of the graphics, you’ve basically got what looks like a checkerboard. All of the mechanics are the same. Different units have different moves and abilities. Players rearrange troops to get the best strategic advantage over enemies. Win the game by capturing the king. You can either play along against a challenging artificial intelligence opponent, or online in Hotseat Multiplayer mode. This game is available for $0.99.

Ultimate Robot Fighting

In this fast-paced battle game, players take control of giant robots in Street Fighter style hand-to-hand combat. Tap and swipe different combinations of moves to take down your opponents. Fight three-against-three in tap-out style melee combat. When your robot isn’t doing the job right, tap another one to see how it handles the fight. This battle game is also a card collecting game. Robots are purchased and stored like a deck of cards. You can also equip special items on your robots in the form of power cards. Upgrade your fighters’ weapons and armor and gain experience by fighting against stronger opponents. This game is available for free.

Shift

Pixite’s newest photo filter app is a real winner. With this one, you can randomize a huge variety of filters to create unique effects for your images. Tap the shuffle button to generate a filter based on different features, like light leaks overlays, color gels, and more. Then, adjust the size and location of the effect using the three movable points. You can also change the intensity and color temperature. Not enough for you? Flatten it out using the Re-Shift feature and add a whole new filter layer. You can keep it going all day long. This app is available for $0.99.

iOS 8.2 Beta 3 Seeded To The Developers

Here comes another iOS beta and this time it’s the third beta for iOS 8.2. The third beta for iOS 8.2 was released to iOS developers earlier today and it comes just a week after the release of iOS 8.2 beta 2.

The iOS 8.2 beta 3 carries a build number 12D5452
a and is now available as an OTA update for developers who are running the second beta. The update includes several bug fixes and improvements such as bringing back Blood Glucose level in the Health app. It also fixes a bug that caused the Messages app a very long time to open conversations.
If you’re a developer, you can also download this update from iOS developer center. Apple will most likely release iOS 8.2 to the public in early 2015 along with the release of the Apple Watch. iOS 8.2 brought the WatchKit SDK, which lets developers create Apps, Notifications view and Glances for the Watch. Xcode 6.2 beta 3 with WatchKit was also released alongside the beta 3.

Apps get pricier in Russia over collapsing ruble

Apple is increasing App Store prices in Russia over the plummeting ruble, the basic monetary unit of the 145 million people country and some other former republics of the USSR, reports 9to5Mac.
So after halting online sales due to the fluctuating currency, now Apple’s virtual store is feeling the repercussions of Russia’s troubled economy.
Russian ruble, and consequentially the country’s economy as a whole, have stagnated for months now due to the falling price of oil and economic sanctions imposed by EU and USA over President Putin’s annexation of Crimea.
As a result of the price increase, the entry-level 99-cent price point has gone up to 62 rubles.
“We’ve increased the price for apps and In-App Purchases on the Russian App Store to account for changes in foreign exchange rates,” reads Apple’s email to developers.
“We’ve also updated the pricing matrix, which is now available in the app’s Pricing section in My Apps on iTunes Connect,” the message continues. iTunes Connect, by the way, is a web service developers use to upload binaries, content and marketing materials to iTunes.

iOS 8 Is Now Running On 63 Percent Of All iOS Devices

Apple has updated the iOS 8 adoption rate numbers on their iOS developer portal. It was at 60 percent on November 24th and has gone up 3 percent in two weeks. That is kind of a slow climb, but it’s still pretty good.

iOS 8 isn’t supported on iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch 4th gen and older, which could be one of the reasons why the adoption rate is climbing so slow. Another reason could be that the iOS 8 OTA update needs you to have around 2 GB of free space on your device. If you’re updating through iTunes, then the free space isn’t an issue. However, users usually update their iOS devices using OTA update, as it is much easier to do.
The adoption rate is measured using the App Store and it was 63 percent on the 8th of December. As seen in the chart below, iOS 7 is on 33 percent of devices and 4 percent of devices are still running iOS 6 and earlier versions.
Yesterday, Apple released iOS 8.1.2

to the public, a small update that included bug fixes. The iOS 8 adoption rate includes all versions till iOS 8.1.2.

iOS 8.1.2 Released, Includes Bug Fixes And Improvements

Apple, on Tuesday, released iOS 8.1.2 to the public, which includes bug fixes and other improvements. The release comes three weeks after Apple pushed iOS 8.1.1 that patched the Pangu jailbreak. Developers weren’t given any betas of iOS 8.1.2 prior to the release, which is due to the fact that this update mainly fixes a bug with ringtones going missing.

In iOS 8.1.1, some users reported an issue wherein the ringtones they downloaded from the iTunes Store would disappear from their device. iOS 8.1.2, carrying build number 12B440, fixes that bug.
You can download and update to iOS 8.1.2 from Settings>About>Software Update on your iOS device. Or you could download the IPSW

and restore from iTunes. This is a minor update, so don’t expect any new features. It is supported on iPhone 4s and above, iPad 2 and above and iPod Touch 5.

iOS 8.1.1 Still Being Signed, You Can Downgrade From iOS 8.1.2

For whatever reason, users who want to downgrade to iOS 8.1.1 from iOS 8.1.2 can do so. Apple is still signing the iOS 8.1.1 firmware, which means that you can downgrade using iTunes. iOS 8.1.2 was released two days ago, which included a fix for a bug that caused ringtones to disappear for certain users.
